Hi there and welcome!
I'm Corina, the founder and owner of Wixom's Whimsies.
Wixom's Whimsies is a small, one-woman run shop located in Southern California.
I take my inspiration from my favorite things in life - nature, music, the beach, Wixom, and even our own customers!
Like you, I absolutely adore my dog. Wixom, a fluffy little black mutt with a silly underbite, is the inspiration for this shop! My husband, Andrew, and I rescued her in May 2016 and shortly after adopting her, I began making bandanas for her out of fabric scraps that I already had. Of course, that led to purchasing beautiful fabrics to make more accessories for her, and I figured why not sell the extras to my friends? Little did I know that others would love my designs just as much as I do, and within a few short months my hobby had turned into a second job!
Another thing I am passionate about is caring for the environment. You'll notice that all of our packaging is eco-friendly, meaning it is made from recycled (and recyclable) materials. I do not use extra materials when packaging (such as plastic slip covers, filler fluff, or tissue) in order to avoid excess waste. Please remember to re-use and recycle!
Here are a few fun facts about me:
❊ I'm originally from Michigan, but moved to SoCal in 2012 to attend grad school (and escape those miserable midwest winters!). I definitely love this SoCal weather, but I do miss the greenery and soft sands of the Midwest. I will always have a soft spot in my heart for fellow Michiganders!
❊ I'm currently working part time as a licensed mental health therapist at a private practice.
❊ I have been sewing for about 17 years! I learned from my mother and grandmother how to sew the right way - no short cuts or cheater steps! I sewed both of my prom dresses and 3 homecoming dresses in high school, in addition to a quilt, countless pillow covers, a bridesmaid dress, a fair number of sun dresses, blouses, skirts, and other random smaller items in between projects.
❊ Not only do I love to sew, but I also love to cross-stitch! A prized and sentimental project I recently completed is a cross-stitched picture of Big Sable Point lighthouse, which is (you guessed it) in Michigan.
❊ Another hobby I am passionate about is gardening! I have a number of special plants including a favorite rose bush, colorful succulents, and a Desert Rose Bonsai (which my family fondly calls "the claw" due to it's struggles in chilly Michigan when it frequently dropped it's leaves!)
❊ I'm sure you noticed a few recurring themes here surrounding nature and creative outlets.
